  • on This Is Just To Say by William Carlos Williams, on November 18, 2005
Actually, there is no apology made at all, and I always saw it as a jab. He does not say "this is just to say I am sorry," no, he says, "this is just to say I have eaten"

He makes it clear that he believes the plums were probably for someone else, and makes a point of telling them how cold and delicious they were. He asks for forgiveness without saying he is sorry.

  • It comes off quite clearly to me. "She" has cast a noose around his neck, and the word noose is chosedn quite purposely rather than lasso or lariat to imply the roping is also a death to a part of this person, as he loses himself in her. She uses her feminie wiles to get him to pay her cattle taxes, and because he is so taken with her, he does it.

  • on My Papa's Waltz by Theodore Roethke, on December 31, 2004
If you don't look very deeply, this seems like a nice poem about a father/son moment, but Roethke chose his nouns, verbs and adjectives very carefully. Notice: whiskey, death, battered, beat, hard... this boy is not enjoying this "waltz" at all. He's probably clinging to that shirt because he is afraid he will otherwise.

  • I am so glad I clicked on this poem. As a Lit student, I am familiar with a lot of poets, from Sherman Alexie to William Wordsworth, but I have never read anything by James Thompson. This is an elegant verse, and I believe I will be looking up more of his work.
