on What We Need by Edgar Albert Guest, on November 5, 2008
What have our schools come to?
It's true that parents are to raise their children and some how, with all the single parents out there, the job or raising children seems to have taken a back seat to making a living, therefore, our schools have become the back-up system to the home and are expected to "raise" the children because the parents aren't. The problem is that in way too many cases, educators feel that they shouldn't have the responsibility either. Educators, in order to teach "a truer type o'man" would have to live their lives as examples to their students and all too often they are not living the way they know they should be either, so who is, and what is being taught to the youth of today? -

Lessons of Life
As a high school teacher I try to instill in my students lessons like this one. All too often these qualities of character are not addressed by parents or teachers. Each has a tendency to point the finger of culpability at the other. It doesn't matter who teaches them, what matters is when they are taught. "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it." Edgar Albert Guest seems to have grasped this point and with eloquence and beauty incorporated it into the lives of all who read his poetry. -

Memories
Mr. Guest seems to have caught one of those timeless moments in mid air. I'm sure we all have times that we remember that warm our hearts, even when it is very cold outside like this poem portrays.

Lesson learned
This poem reminds me that life isn't a destination but a journey. We don't realize, when we're young, that "whatever doesn't kill us only makes us stronger."
