His house is in the village though
My high school teacher felt that this phrase referred to a church, and thus the whole first stanza was referring to God. So, he meant God as the 'owner' of the woods, and 'His house' meant a church.The quiet contemplation of life and death that follows makes much more sense from this viewpoint.
