  • THIS is why I like to click the "old poem of the day" link. It opens me up to poets and poems I have never heard of. It brought a smile to my face actually, as I could almost see the poet grumbling about the lost tool and frantically searching for another. And the humility in the final couplet is just perfect. When I have more time and am not at work, I'll want to check out more of his work.

  • Thank you for posting this as old poem of the day on 4/17/09. I will now want to read more of this legend's work.

  • Wow

Sounds like a toast a Father or Father-In-Law might give at a wedding reception. At the very least, it reminds me of advice from an elder made wise by time and experience. It carries some bitterness, as though the speaker were admonishing the young to not make the same mistakes {he/she} did. It's almost like a darker take on "If Tomorrow Never Comes"... the country song by Garth Brooks. [though I DO realize this piece was written MUCH earlier, and some might say, much better.]
All in all, I'm impressed and will want to read more of this Author's work when I have time.

This is a GR8 example of why Hughes is one of America's...no, the World's great poets.
Very accessible style of writing = more readers. Or it should, anyway.
