on The Great Oak Tree by William Schwenck Gilbert, on July 19, 2004The rhyme scheme and the repition make it feel like a light-hearted romp through the woods, but the subject matter speaks otherwise. I'm not so sure the ex-lovers are literally meant to be an oak and a flower, but he was strong, and she felt herself unworthy of him. This reminds me of 'To a Lady' by Anna Laetitia Barbauld in that the flower is simply there to be beautiful, not being strong enough to do anything else. She cries as the oak abandons her, not able to recover on her own.

on Duty Surviving Self-Love, The Only Sure Friend Of Declining Life. A Soliloquy by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, on July 19, 2004Both of the above are correct, you need to take this poem one line at a time. People change with time, and you cannot cease to love a friend simply because they seem less to you now then they once did. It's your perceptions that changed, and to withhold your love, and acceptance, because things do not stay a certain way is certainly very selfish. This poem is very preachy, but I suppose the message is good, though hard to follow. People change, along with your perceptions of them, and it is only human to take it against them. No matter who is lessened by it.

on Sonnet IV: Bright Star of Beauty by Michael Drayton, on July 19, 2004Alright, I'm a bit too dense for this one. It's subtle, and holds deeper meaning behind it's ambiguity. I really like the first two lines, I'm not sure why. I also like the imagery of love setting down his quiver. I usually do not like such a strict rhyme scheme, but it works for this paticular poem. I think I understand that while others seek to entertain with words, he seeks the truth, in timeless sonnets. I hope I'm worthy to recieve it...

on A Boy Named Sue by Sheldon Allan Silverstein, on July 19, 2004I like the laid back flow of this poem. People are pretty intolerant of someone just because of their name. I was really curious about what the ending was going to be. This was rather a fast read, as Sue fought the world towards his father so he could seek his revenge. And there's his old dad conveniently sitting in a bar! Well, I'm glad it didn't end with them killing each other. It was a happy ending, and I didn't see it coming.
