  • on May by John Shaw Neilson, on November 27, 2003
A twisting dive into fantasy.Neilson depicts May like Willy Wonka's factory, whimsical and puffing magic. This piece rains in torrents of rainbow-colored potion. My favorite stanza:
    "Shyly the silver-hatted mushrooms make
    Soft entrance through,
    And undelivered lovers, half awake,
Hear noises in the dew "

  • Classic Dickinson. The harmonious semi-rhymes that categorize Emily's writings are here in full force, making the poem not just a mental playground but a soothing lullaby. One verse sticks out in my mind, its helpless generousity permeating the outer coating of close-minded criticism:"It asked a crumb—of Me."

  • on Ariel by Sylvia Plath, on September 17, 2003
More inenbriating goodness from everyone's favorite toxic genius.I am always amazed at Plath's pathogenic stanzas, plateauing and stalling on the edge between meaningless, cryptic wordplay and divine, pensive masterwork. This poem is a great example, shifting from something to substance with every other line, keeping you on the edge of you seat in anticipation of the cathartic climax that will never come.My favorite line:"Eye, the cauldron of morning."

  • on An Appearance by Sylvia Plath, on September 14, 2003
Another shot of poetic lavender to remind my why Plath is one of my all-time favorites.I cannot express how subtley fierce this [poem was, like a great, shaking dragon or a giggling tiger.
"From her lips ampersands and percent signs
    Exit like kisses."
    Emm...wondrous imagery.
