  • on Intrigue by Stephen Maria Crane, on December 20, 2003
what works in this poem, for me, is the way it careens... from its slow, melodramatic beginnings, it snowballs into darker depths, as the increasing brevity of the stanzas hastens the pace.

Its a little broad for me though... personally...
The arc of emotion is rather wide, and I get lost in the transition
maybe I just need to grow into an understanding of Crane's stylistic choices.

  • Yeah, but If I was Marlowe I could write like that too.

Hmm... I hate to say it, much as I love this poem, but the first thing I think of is parody when I read the first line...

"Was this the face that launched a thousand ships?
Really? Well, I mean shes pretty but come on!
A thousand?! Thats a bit showy!"

anyways, It is a classic and I wont make chris roll around in his grave too much for the sake of my enjoyment.
One thing it does is inspire me to read more... my poetry is entirely to devoid of literary allusion.

  • sigh!

its pretty universal... those tiny gestures... the way a person walks, breaths, glances... I can feel the shivers in his spine and the rush in his heart
