  • on Was I lost by Ono no Komachi, on January 30, 2005
I thought that this was just full of beautiful imagery. Dreams can indeed seem so real at the time, that one might wish never to awaken but remain in that 'world' forever.

  • on Visible colours by Ono no Komachi, on January 30, 2005
I think it pretty much depends on one’s frame of mind when reading this piece.

When hopelessly in love it seems impossible to think of life in any other way. But when recovering from a broken heart, the colours of the world seem muted, so that even the brightest and the most beautiful of flowers seem faded.

  • on This world of men by Ki no Tsurayuki, on January 26, 2005
Although seemingly a simple statement of fact the image grows with each line.

The world in general, but defined more personally with the question aimed at the individual reader. First there is speech, maybe just casual conversation, but slowly words materialise , maybe overheard, coming through more audibly now, that turn quickly to rumour, and finally the pain and possibly betrayal felt.

The pen is mightier than the sword words cut deep, whether written or spoken.

  • I took the line Today, for his sake alone to refer to someone else and not the writer himself.

I think that although he had come to terms with his own fate, he still felt sadness for those who will be left to grieve his passing, and it is for them rather than himself that he feels most sorrow.
