    HOW CAN WE IMPROVE?
Here are a few recent suggestions. Please let us know what you think, or add suggestions of your own.

    Colour Schemes ?
A different scheme for each topic?

    Name change ?
{diddi at Storywrite} suggests Rename 'Oldpoetry', call the site "Poetry Classics"

    Competitions ?
{rbruce at Allpoetry} says One thought is to feature a poem and challenge all poets to a contest. Contest being to imitate the style of the featured poet.

Allpoetry's own Old Poem of the Week
{rbruce at Allpoetry} says I have always enjoyed reading 'Old poetry' But, no one can just read it non stop for any length of time. How about a featured poem on ALL POETRY For a week at a time? Something with rhyme and rhythm and not too long.

    Trivial Poetry
{JudyJudyJudy at Allpoetry} suggests a regular focus on the Trivial Poets or Something salacious perhaps. A poetic equivalent to Brittany Speers [Mary Wollestonecraft. Or Sappho perhaps?]
  • How about a quarterly or monthly magazine. Readers can send in contributions. Letters pages. Focus on specific poets, Focus on specific Styles/Forms, Comment of the Quarter/Month, Poems on a given theme eg food.

    • On AP there is once again a link for our poem of the day - the poem being the top featured poem on our list of 4 shown on OP's front page,
This is a recent re-addition of the long-ago feature which always proved so popular.

My only whinge is that it is placed below just about everything else on AP's front page. I would like to see it placed in a more prominent place, - suppose we can't have everything though

Re-naming the site might have it's virtues but It's a registered name and we are used to it now after all these years. Kevin would have the only voice on this I would imagine,

I like JJJ's idea of 'salacious' poets [some of them] there is one of our older poets who parked his morals in the gutter - his name escapes me for the moment - expletive poetry is not something on OP I would support. :- just remembered after trawling through the ‘W’ lists - Lord John Willmot is the man I speak of – his particular genre of poetry I wouldn’t add my name to and though it may prove popular with some I feel OP is worthy of better publicity than this.

Colour schemes we’re working on – and not before time either – it’s taken a while for K to come around but kudos to him for the ability to de-bland our site, still needs a few tweaks here and there but we’re on our way.

Competitions – any support in this department would be so welcome. I’ve even thought of ‘paying’ Friends of Oldpoetry’ [in points] to have contests under their own names but haven’t actually done anything about that yet.

I do feel it’s time to start the birthday columns again – with a maximum of 2 poets each month [1 – 1st of month and 2nd about 15th ] to spread across the whole month . OR 1 birthday and I special interest column.

Columns of interest: I’ll always support these – I already have one planned for Anzac day in April, and as you know Jim WWI is also a special interest area of mine.

Whatever can be done to advertise, gather more OP friends, site visitors – comments and members is all good as far as I’m concerned. Except for Lord Willmot’s ilk - my support is never ending.

      Von

I just 'pop' in when I have time, but I could run a contest for you on storywrite, I have a lot of points there, so that wouldn't be a problem. You could judge it as a team. I could open a Group for you if you wish, what ever you would like.

    More Activites

I would agree with the suggestion that holding contests of different types and, perhaps, offering online classes for the works of selected poets, i.e. Frost, Neruda, Sexton, etc. as well as classes in poetic forms might increase the interest level of folks.

I visited this site for the first time today when I saw a link to it from allpoetry.com and, after I'd read some poems by my favorite classic poets, felt rather at a loss to find much else to do here. In its present format, the site serves more as an online reference encyclopedia; however, if there were more interactive features and rewarding programs, styled somewhat after allpoetry.com, people might be inclined to be more active here. I recently hosted a Old Poetry Cento contest and got few people to read the old masters poems while searching for lines. Unfortunately, despite the great amount of points as reward, I didn't get many entries, but still am happy with the result.
The idea of a contest to imitate the style of the featured poet, sounds good. I think that might bring some more attention to OP. Another thing, we used to be able feature OP poems in the featured box at AP, is it still possible?
    • for MariGoes

I dont' believe it is possible since the new site came into use in Feb. 06. Kevin has recently placed a 'Poem of the Day' on AP's front page, near the bottom of the page and that has brought a little extra traffic our way. The response in general to contests connected with OP always seem to be short on entrants so in many cases we go for 'quality' instead of 'quantity', well that's what we say
There is one right now regarding Wordsworth by raspberry, the standard of poems/entries is very high but quantity is low, which it seems you experienced yourself. However, we keep on keeping on and one day we'll be pleasantly surprised and all our hard work and time will be worthwhile.
      Thank You for your input,
      Von - Oldpoetry Team
    • You can still spotlight your poems here at Oldpoetry and Kevin picks from them to chose tha Allpoetry Old-poem link.
I am also considering a feature/competition based on your CENTO idea but using specific poets.

Peteskid had this idea to host one to young poets at AP, but then with a small number of lines (15 to 25). And just as your idea, with specific poets. Kids like trophies, maybe that could be an incentive to get them here too
        • sounds like a fine idea - OP could supply points to increase the incentive too. Perhaps Peteskid could make contact with the set-up and poets he has in mind, it won't take much time at all to supply both links and points.
          Thanks for this. Von Oldpoetry

Any time you create an OP contest, be sure to let Kari or myself or one of the mods know to add the 'spotlight' category to it, so that it'll show up on the front page of the contests...
