I am happy with the reference to slings and swivels having been a weapons instructor. Sometimes we used wooden replicas that didn't have all the parts hence the bit about parts "which in your case we have not got"
However I also know that naming the parts by rote ends up so routine that the mind wanders and it appears that is the case here with the subject's mind wandering from the military to nature and he is thinking of similar shapes or actions (you had to point to and manipulate the parts of the rifle you were nameing).
As the poem progresses the day dreaming goes deeper
