I was just wondering what the underlying message or theme this poem was presenting. I think that the poem's saying we all have something divine within ourselves because we have the power to create and destroy. And though there are always rules to creation, we have the power to overcome them sometimes. -
Yours is one interpretation. Another might be that Whitman is denying the existence of divine planning.
