What is rhe point of any poem?
This is Slessor's thoughts at (dare I say) one moment in time. It had meaning to him then and it has meaning to some even now but not everyone gets the same meaning and some do not see anything other than a pleasant positioning of words.

Slessor recorded his thoughts about time by using a variety of techniques: the belief of the natives (no one can contol it--so why wear a watch?), what time does, and perspectives. This poem is a stream of consciousness and philosophy union. Slessor "takes his time" with his thoughts, and then, through writing, explores the thoughts. A bit of humor is the concept that somehow Time was cheated from robbing a moment from him, "I and the moment laugh, and let him go". Remember, you don't have to like or understand all poems--it just depends how far you want to go with it. When I started with William Blake, I didn't get some of the deeper meanings, but, now I'm getting there, ha.
Try taking the lines apart-do you see yourself in any of the lines? Do you think the images work? Find any humor?
I think it is interesting that Time follows fate, and that he "keeps appointments with a million years". Can you picture Time sitting with a calendar? HA! So, is the poet saying Time isn't boundless. Um... -
