Do you think A B Patterson was writing about a sweetheart or about his wife? He wrote Waltzing Matilda when he was visiting Dagworth cattle station at Winton Qld, and he was attracted by a Miss Christina Macpherson, the squatter's daughter. Christina played him the tune of the song and he was inspired to write words to the tune and came up with Waltzing Matilda.
Was it Christina or Patterson's wife who inspired this love poem? -
I personally like to believe that it's his wife he's talking to as he was indeed and an old man when he passed in 1941 leaving his widow alone. However the mystery is..... we shall never truly know!
Lovely poem

According to my understanding he didn't marry until 1903, eleven years after writing this poem.
On that basis my vote is for a sweetheart!
But what the heck it's still a good poem.
