    I simply love this poem...
    "a deep sound strikes like a rising knell"
    You can imagine a shrill sound rising...the pitch symbolizing war blood and death...
    "the beat of the alarming drum" when i read these lines, i unconciously connected the beat of the alarming drum with the speeding heartbeat of those soldiers...the uncertainity of coming back, the anxiousness in their hearts...
    the poem is one of my favourites.
