SAINT AND SCARECROW -- The Life and Work of Lilian Bowes-Lyon by Howard Watson, from Old PoetryOne-time Poet Laureate Cecil Day-Lewis dedicated the title poem of his 1957 collection, Pegasus and other poems, to her memory, William Plomer wanted to marry her and Philip Larkin selected one of her more epic works for The Oxford Book of Twentieth Century English Verse. Yet the life and work of Lilian Bowes-Lyon is largely forgotten and her novels and her collections of poetry remain out of print. Considering her literary – and royal – connections, as well as the success she achieved in her fairly brief life, cut tragically short by illness, the poetry of Lilian Bowes-Lyon is mostly an unknown pleasure. Her name is absent from national biographies of public or literary figures of the last century in British life. Yet in his recent biography of the late Queen Mother, there is no mention of Lilian, even though other members of her family are well represented.

Translations and Translators by Jim S, from Old PoetryThere is a whole world of poetry out there and a whole world of potential readers. I am conscious that we are not reaching vast areas of that target audience since we post work, predominantly, in English. True we do have a smattering of other languages on offer as well as translations of some of the more prominent non-English poems.
But we do not have enough. -
