on The Lion and Albert by Marriott Edgar, on April 17
Source material
Did you know that Edgar based this on a real-life mauling of a small boy at London Zoo? And that SH was originally very reluctant to perform it for that reason?
(Source: "The Stanley Holloway Monologues ed. Michael Marshall 1979 ISBN 0 241 10306 1)
Illustrations by Bill Tidy are good but not a patch on John Hassall's originals as shown here. -
on Three Ha'Pence A Foot by Marriott Edgar, on April 17
Unsung hero
For my money Marriott Edgar is one of the great unsung heroes of British comedy.. monologues like this one simply don't date and get the same enthusiastic response from audiences - of all ages - as when they were written. I learned this one over fifty years ago (!) & still perform it now & again.
Thanks so much for this site, it's helped me rediscover some of Edgar's gems that I'd lost track of. -
on The Runcorn Ferry by Marriott Edgar, on April 17
New first verse
The first verse has been out of date for over fifty years as the transporter bridge is no more. My dad wrote a revised version of which I'm sure ME would have approved:
There's a new-fangled bridge now o'er t'Mersey
But Runcorn's still best known to fame
For Transporter Bridge as took folks over t'stream..
To my knowlege there is only one functioning transporter bridge in the UK - at Newport in South Wales.

Thanks a bunch!
This monologue is what brought me to this site courtesy of Google! I'll be performing this in a couple of weeks (with seasonal props of course) & let you know how it goes down!
