  • on Her Dilemma by Thomas Hardy, on June 26, 2007

    I'm confused

I've read it three times now, and I can't work out if she lied and told him she loved him, or didn't - the dilemma being too great. I'd be interested to read how other people conceived it ; I haven't yet read any other comments.
Logic would tell me that she was in such a dilemma that she did neither.
BTW What does he mean by throughly - is it a word he made up, for rhyming purposes?
Still, a very enjoyable read, and I'm off to read more of his work now.
I'm pleased to have been introduced to this wonderful man.

  • on She At His Funeral by Thomas Hardy, on June 26, 2007

    Brilliant

The first poem I've ever read by this well-known writer, but I'll be back for more.
I loved his style, and his use of the noun as an adjective (something I've noticed prevalent with Betjeman) - IE "a stranger's pace".
    Short but brilliant.

  • on The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, on June 26, 2007

    confused

I have to say that although I really like the format, and use of rhythm and rhyme, I don't really completely understand the moral of the tale.

  • on Atrocities by Siegfried Sassoon, on June 26, 2007

    very moving

An interesting angle, and means of making a point.
There's a huge amount of bullshit talked in bars throughout the land - every night!
I've read about 3 of his poems so far, and I really like his attitude towards the war ; the wastefulness of it ; the hypocrisy of its combatants!
