on The Slave's Dream by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, on January 9
The Slave's Dream
The slave has indeed died as is mentioned that his eternal soul has released the beaten body from a life of degradation. As he lay dying he was reminded of a prior life of freedom. Longfellow, in a superb poem has illustrted how the institution of slavery robbed a people of their hopes, their ancestry and their very history

Longfellow
Longfellow is only telling us that there is a purpose to our existence as human beings. We do not live our lives merely to die and be buried, but hope that there is a greater existence beyond earthly death. Then again, he implies that if we get into the rut of believing that the grave is all we can look forward to, then we cannot possibly enjoy life. It is an original description of clinical depression, don't you think? After all man is an animal who needs a purpose in life and in this case he is telling us that that purpose extends beyond death!
