Black American writer Anita Scott Coleman published short stories, essays, and poems in leading magazines such as Half-Century Magazine, Crisis, The Messenger, and Opportunity during the 1920s and 1930s. Coleman's heritage is varied and unique: Born in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico, in 1890, her mother was a slave who was bought by her Cuban father, who fought in the Civil War on the Union side. Coleman grew up in New Mexico, where she graduated from the New Mexico Teachers College. She later taught school in Los Angeles. Married, she and her husband had four children. In Los Angeles, where she also managed a boarding house for children and pursued her writing career. Unfortunately, little else is known about Anita Scott Coleman's life.
