Charles Peguy

I lived from 1873-1914. I was from France, and am in the European category.

Charles Peguy was born into poverty in Orléans, France. A scholarship student, educated at the Ecole Normale, he originally intended to teach philosophy, but instead became a fervent Socialist, (perhaps because of his modest beginnings), which is strongly reflected in his first version of Jeanne d'Arc (1897). This began his lifetime obsession with Joan of Arc, who was also born in Orléans.

He opened a bookshop in Paris, which soon began a centre for political agitation, as it got tangled with the Dreyfus Affair. He started his Cashiers de la Quinzaine (Fortnightly Notebooks) soon after he opened his bookshop, to which many prominent French writers contributed.

Despite leaving the Church he remained a devout Catholic, and showed a zealous patriotism as in his dramatic works on Joan of Arc. Charles Peguy was killed in action in the early stages of The First World War, while leading a charge as a lieutenant at Villeroy, September 1914, in the First Battle of the Marne

His important works of poetry include Le Mystère des Saints Innocents (1912).
