Christopher Hassall

I lived from 1912-1963. I was from England, and am in the English category.

Christopher Vernon Hassall was born in London, England on 24th March 1912. He was educated at Brighton College and subsequently he lived at Tonford Manor a house with a fine mediaeval stone tower and situated by the River Stour on the outskirts of Canterbury. At nearby Thanington Church there is a pane of glass engraved to his memory.
He married the actress Eve Lynett and had two children, a son and a daughter. His daughter Imogen became an actress and appeared in several films (Ivor Novello was her God-Father)
He was an actor, dramatist, librettist, lyricist and poet, who was best known for his memorable musical partnership with the actor and composer Ivor Novello who he met whilst touring in the same stage company.
He was also noted for his biographies of Rupert Brooke (1964, Faber and Faber) and Edward Marsh (this won the 1959, James Tait Black Memorial Prize).
He died at the age of 51 in Rochester, Kent on April 26th, 1963 after suffering a heart attack whilst running for a train in order to see his daughter who was in a play at the Royal Opera House.
