Dudley Randall was born 14 January 1914 in Washington, D.C. He moved to Detroit in 1920. His first published poem appeared in the Detroit Free Press when he was thirteen. He served in WWII which is reflected in several of his poems. He earned a Degree in English and Science from Wayne State University. He was a librarian, editor, and poet. Randall was poet laureate of Detroit in 1981.
