A good deal of controversy has arisen not only about this lady's name but also about her most famous poem.
The title under which she normally appears is Ethyl Lynn Beers, an adaptation of her given name and the name of her husband, William H Beers. but she can also be found under several variations. Ethelinda Eliot Beers; Ethelin Eliot Beers" and "Mrs. Ethel Lyon Beers" as well.
The poem All Quiet along the Potomac is usually attributed to her and is said to have been written after she spotted two newspaper articles (All quiet at the front and Death of a Picket). This is often attributed to a dead or dying soldier but mist authorities now agree Ethelinda was the original writer (in Harpers Bazaar)
She published poetry in many papers and magazines, particularly in the New York Ledger, and among the most popular at that time were “Weighing the Baby” and “Which Shall It Be?” Then in 1863 she published General Frankie: A Story for Little Folks. However she steadfastedly refused to produce a collected edition of her poetry since she feared she would die soon after.
"All Quiet Along the Potomac and Other Poems" finally appeared in print on October 10, 1879, and she died the next day.
