James Lister Cuthbertson, was born in Scotland in 1851. He received his education at both Glenalmond, and Merton College, Oxford, from where he graduated with B.A.

He arrived in Melbourne, Australia in 1874. He taught as a Senior Classical Master at Geelong Grammar School, in Victoria from 1875-96.

His works include:
`Barwon Ballads' (Melbourne, 1893).
