John Wheelwright

I lived from 1897-1940. I was from the United States, and am in the Americas category.

I was influenced by poets Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear.

John Wheelwright was tenth in direct descent to Rev John Wheelwright and was named after him. He was from a rich and well known Boston family. His father was Edmund (Ned) March Wheelwright, an architect who designed many of Boston's most imaginative buildings. His mother, Elizabeth Brooks Wheelwright, was the great-granddaughter of Peter Chardon Brooks, the wealthiest of Boston's colonial "merchant princes."
Jack and his father were very close and also shared many of the same literary tastes, enjoying together wit and fantasy of Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. Jack's fascination with these writers continued throughout his life, and became a part of his own artistic sensibility. Unfortunately when John was still in prep school his father suffered a mental breakdown and two years later commited suicide.
