Ki no Tsurayuki

I lived from 868-964. I was from Japan, and am in the Asian category.

Ki no Tsurayuki was a poet as well as a prose writer, well versed in Chinese. He was the chief compiler of the first Anthology of Japanese poetry Kokinshu (905), and the writer of its preface. The Kokinshu cosisted of approximately 1,111 poems. Tsurayuki also served as govenor of Tosa Province.

In the Tosa Diary, Tsurayuki, under the pretence of writing as a woman, described a voyage on a boat. With this diary he was able to lay the groundwork for the triumph of women's literature later in the Heian period. He helped to shape the style and imagery of all waka poetry that followed him.

In the preface of Kokinshu, Tsurayuki wrote: "It is poetry that effortlessly moves the heavens and the earth, awakens the world of invisible spirits to deep feel, softens the relationship between men and women, and consoles the hearts of fierce warriors."
