I lived from 1845-1904. I was from Kazakhstan, and am in the Asian category.
A poet, philosopher, and composer from Kazakhstan, Abai was afforded the privilege of a European post education in Russia, due to the wealth of his father, a feudal lord. While attending school in Russia, Abai came into contact with the writings of Aleksandr Pushkin and Mikhail Lermontov. Abai helped to legitimize Kazakh as a written language. He also translated many European writings into Kazakh. His poetry differed greatly from that before him, which was mostly oral. His poetry expressed nationalism and reflected the effect of the political and economic changes of his time. Abai and his poetry helped open up Kazakhstan to many opportunities for education and philosophical diversity, due to Abai's Russian influences. Kazakhs today consider Abai as one of the first cultural heroes to penetrate the surface of the entirety of their national awareness.
