Laila Akhyaliyya

I lived from 646-704. I was from Iraq, and am in the Asian category.

Laila Akhyaliyya, was a member of a noble family of the 'Uqail, from what is presently Iraq. She lived in the later part of 600 AD. She lived during the reign of two Ummayad caliphs of and knew them personally.

Her husband's name was Sawwar but she was in love with another poet called Tauba ibn Humayyar of the Banu Sa'id tribe. Tauba died as an outlaw and Laila often defended him often wittily in debates with the Ummayads.

Some of Lailas poems are in praise of the Caliphs. There are some which are an exchange of diatribe with other rival poets.

Most of her poetry records the life and deeds of her tribe and mourns the dead.
In many poems Laila mourns Tauba.
