I lived from 1849-1873. I was from Mexico, and am in the Americas category.
Manuel Acuna was born in the city of Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico on August 27, 1849. His parents were Francisco Acuña and Refugio Narro. He learned to read and write at an early age. He studied at Colegio Josefino, in Saltillo. In 1865, he went to Mexico City to attend the School of San Ildefonso, where he entered as a full time student and studied mathematics, Latin, French and philosophy. In 1868, he began his studies in medicine at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. He was a distinguished student, but never completed his medical studies. At this time, he began his brief literary career. He first became known after writing a poem for the death of one of his close friends Eduardo Alzúa. He helped found the Nezahualcóyotl Literary Society, in which he presented his first verses. The works presented in the society were published in the magazine El Anáhuac (Mexico 1869) and in a pamphlet of the newspaper La Iberia. The pamphlet contains eleven poems and an article in prose by Acuna. He was only 24 years old when he made a name for himself as a poet. In 1871, he wrote a dramatic work called "El pasado" that brought him fame as an outstanding poet.
