Menella Bute Smedley

I lived from 1820-1877. I was from England, and am in the English category.

Menella Bute Smedley was born in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, England. Her father was a clergyman, writer and tutor. The exact year of her birth has been debated and placed betwen 1815 and 1820. She was the oldest of five children and had fragile health as a child. Menella was educated at home and received a thorough knowledge of the classics which served her well in her writing career. Her father was forced to retire due to poor health and Menella assumed her father's professional responsibilities as his health failed.
