Nancy Byrd Turner

I lived from 1880-1971. I was from the United States, and am in the Americas category.

Nancy Byrd Turner was born in 1880 in Boydton, Virgina. She had published a number of poems, novels, and song lyrics for children during her lifetime. She also served on the editorial staff of Youth Companion, Atlantic Monthly, and The Independent Magazine. In 1930 she received The Golden Rose, the highest award of the New England Poetry Society.
Turner was a descendent of both Thomas Jefferson and Pocohantas. Through her father's family she was related to Jefferson, and through her mother's side her ancestry was traced to Pocohantas. As a young child, Nancy Byrd Turner began her writing career by writing verse. During her life she contributed to many magazines in both the United States and England. Nancy Byrd Turner was both editor and poet for magazines published in England and the United States. She was also a popular lecturer.
Turner died in 1971 at the age of 91.
