Being that Udall was an avid reader, this got him in trouble in 1527-28 for having in his possession some books that were declared “Heretical, but he was not expelled for this. He had very likely read these books, and at the time even just owning them could have cost him his education.
In 1533 he composed a collection, and with the use of some works from John Leland, wrote “Ditties and Verses” in both Latin and English for Anne Boleyn’s coronation.
In 1537. Udall was appointed Vicar of Braintree (Essex) where he mostly worked as a translator and held the position until 1544. During this time he translated many works, including two of the books of the New Testament, St. Luke, and St. John (which had been started by Queen Mary). All of which he had finished by 1545.
With the throne being taken by a Catholic Monarch, Udall lost both of his livings. He was not forgotten by some of power then, as Queen Mary took support of her “welbeloued Nicholas Udall” and issued warrants for him, that kept him employed. These dated from 1553 and 1554, which kept him working on dramatic events to be shown for the royalty and their guests.
In 1555 he was instated as headmaster of Westminster School. He worked there until the Queen had the Monetary re-established in November of 1556. Udall died the following month.
Nicholas Udall left his mark while he lived, being noted by the Queen, and many scholars and writers of his day. His translations were some of the best known in his time for their quality and accuracy. His plays, were highly noted, and most were attended by the Queen, his most noted patron
