Born in 1893, educated at Rugby and Oriel College, Oxford. He served in France and Flanders with the 6th Durham Light Infantry, He was awarded to Military Cross in 1917, wounded during 1918 His book of poems 'Songs of Youth and War was published in 1918. He won the Newdigate Prize for his poem 'France' in 1919. He became Rector of Edinburgh Academy from 1926 until 1931 moving back to Rugby as Headmaster from 1931 until 1943. He died in 1948
