Richard Ghormley Eberhart was born April 5, 1904, Austin, Minnesota. He served in the Navy during WWII. He went to University of Minnesota, got his B.A. at Dartmouth College in 1926, went to and graduated from St. John's College, Cambridge University in 1929, he received his M.A. there in 1933, and he also went to and graduated from Harvard University. He was a professor at Dartmouth College from 1956 to 1970.

He was known to be a small concavity as a poet. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1966 for Selected Poems: 1930-1965. He also shared the Bollingen Prize in Poetry 1962 and received an award for National Book Award for Poetry 1977 for his Pulitzer Prize winning Collected Poems: 1930-1976.
