I lived from 1837-1885. I was from Spain, and am in the European category.
Rosalía de Castro was born María Resalía Rita in 1837 to unknown parents in Santiago. Little is known of her childhood or education, other than that she excelled in research, and enjoyed drawing, writing, and musical studies.
Castro began writing at the age of twelve, and by seventeen was already known at the Liceo de San Agustín. In 1855, she married Manuel Martinez Murguía, who was a scholar of Galicia. The following year, she gave birth to their first of seven children, a daughter named Alejandra. The family moved often, between Madrid and Simancas, while Rosalía dedicated her life to raising her children and supporting her husband in his work. She never desired fame, and was in fact persuaded by her husband to have her first works published. In her lifetime, she published three full books: La Flor, Cantares, and En las orillas del Sar, the latter of which is considered by many scholars to be a masterpiece in Castilian that prepared the way for the modern metric form in Castilian that many Spanish poets still use today.
In 1885, at 48 years of age, Rosalía de Castro died of cancer at Padrón, her house that has since been turned into a museum. All of her children preceded her in death, leaving the family without any heirs.
