Thomas Wyatt was educated at St John's college, Cambridge, and became an important and popular member of the court of King Henry VIII. In c.1520 he married Elizabeth Brooke, from whom he separated c.1525, charging her with adultery. He served Henry VIII on a number of missions, including to the Papal court and Venice in 1527, and in various offices and was knighted in 1535.

When Anne Boleyn lost the King's favour and was accused of adultery in 1536, Wyatt was arrested and imprisoned in the tower, possibly on suspicion of being one of her lovers. He was released the same year and in favour of the King again was made ambassador to Charles V in 1537.
In 1541 he was arrested again and confined to the tower, this time on accusations of misconduct as ambassador first made against him by Bonner, who was now the Bishop of London. He wrote a spirited defence and was pardoned, perhapse by the request of Queen Catherine Howard. He died suddenly at Sherborne, Dorset, on his way abroard on another diplomatic mission.
None of Wyatt's poems were ever printed in his lifetime and his first published work was, Certain Psalms...Drawn into English Metre, (1549). A version of the penitential psalms from a prose paraphrase by Aretino. More of his poetry appeared in, Tottel's Miscellany,(1557); the rest remained in manuscript until the 19th and 20th centuries.
With Surry, he was the first to domesticate the sonnet into English, providing it with its characteristic final rhyming couplet.
One of Wyatt's best and most famous poems, They Flee from Me, shows his ability to combine native traditions and classical influence.
