William Alexander

I lived from 1567-1640. I was from Scotland, and am in the English category.

Sir William Alexander was born in Clackmannashire village of Menstrie in or about 1567. No one is quite sure the exact year but 1567 is attributed as the year in which he was born. he was brought up in Stirling and educated at the Universities of Leiden and Glasgow. He was the author of the Epic 'Dooms-Day' and also a series of tragedies.

He was a member of the court of King James VI. IN 1621 he was granted land(s) in Canada, which he worked to colonize and named New Scotland or Nova Scotia. In 1626 he served as Secretary of State for Scotland; and in 1631 he was made sole printer of King James' version of the Psalms.

He was knighted in 1609 and created a Viscount in 1633 and Earl of Stirling in 1639 although he suffered bankruptcy in his later years, he died of poverty in London in 1640.
