William John Macquorn Rankine was a Scot, born in Edinburgh on July 5th 1820 and died in Glasgow on December 24th 1872.
He was a noted engineer and physicist as well as an enthusiastic amateur botanist, mathematician, singer, pianist and cellist and a poet who also composed humorous songs. Like many of the upper classes in the nineteenth century he was an extremely well read and well educated dabbler in many fields.
A noted contributor to the science of thermo-dynamics, Rankine developed and published a complete theroy of heat engines including the new dangled (for the time) steam engine and his manuals were in common usage for many years. He published several hundred papers and notes on science and engineering topics. JS
