Yi Hwang

I lived from 1501-1570. I was from Korea, and am in the Asian category.

Better known by his pen name, T’oegye ("Ebbing Brook"), Yi Hwang was the greatest scholar and most influential Confucian philosopher of Korea’s Choson dynasty. He served honorably in several high positions at the royal court before poor health forced him to retire. Yi returned to study and tutor disciples in his beloved Tosan Valley in southeast Korea, where his house still stands. His famous Twelve Songs of Tosan, written in 1565 when T’oegye was 64 years old, is a cycle of verses celebrating the rhythms of nature and examining the essence of the human condition. He is still regarded as Korea’s foremost philosopher. The Society of T’oegye Studies is an international academic organization with members worldwide.
