Henry Vaughan

I lived from 1621-1695. I was from Wales, and am in the English category.

Son of Thomas Vaughan and Denise Morgan, born in 1621, Breconshire, Wales. He likely attended Oxford “Jesus” School in 1638 with his twin brother, Thomas. Thomas who went on to become a Alchemist and Hermetic Philosopher.

Henery left Oxford to study law in 1640, and was interrupted by the civil war in 1645, where he took the King’s side.

While working as a Doctor, he started his poetry works, with his first published in 1646, “Poems with the Tenth Satire of Juvenile Englished”. In 1650 the first of his “Silex Scintillans” was published, a collection of religious poems.

He was a noted Religious and Metaphysical poet, who wrote prolifically.

After the death of his first wife, Henry married her sister, around 1655, Elisabeth. From his first wife, he had one son and three daughters, and from Elisabeth he had one son and three daughters.
