José Jorge Guilherme de Araújo Jorge was born in 20 of May of 1914, the Village of Tarauacá, Acre, Brazil. Son of August Salvador de Araújo Jorge and Zilda Tinoco de Araujo Jorge, two well known accomplished families in Brazil.
He spent his early years in Rio Branco, where he attended primary school in the Colleges Anglo-Americano and secondary school in Peter II. As a young student, he participated in the student press. He was founding member and president of the Academy of Letters of the boarding school Peter II During this time, still a student, made his first contribution in the mainstream press: in 1931 he published his poem “Laugh Clown, Laugh” in the “ Morning Post”, later republished in the “Bertand Register” of 1932.
He also collaborated in the periodical “the Nation”; in the magazines: “Carioca ", and “We go To read” .
In 1932, in an early recognition of his talents, at the College Peter II Day School, in an important literary contest, the he was chosen “Prince of the Poets”.
He enrolled in the National College of Law of the University of Brazil where he was the founder and first President of the Academy of Letters.
While a student, he was a broadcast personality and editor of radio programming.
He became official spokesperson for some university-related activists entities, including the Democratic Students Union , and won several oratória competitions. In Coimbra he received in the title of “honor student” and completed studies in the University of Berlin.
In 1965, he became professor of History and Literature, the College Peter II.
With intense dedication to politics, he was candidate to some public offices: chosen as Representative in 1970 for Guanabara , 1978 was reelected for a third term i. He held the vice-leadership of the MDB and the Presidency of the Commission of Communication in the House of Representatives.
Politically he participated in the struggle against Fascism, as populist and socialist. He fought openly for his beliefs throughout his career and in his writings. While still a student, he fought against the “New State”. He was imprisoned and pursued at times during this period. He was held in the Military Village, under the orders of the GAL. Newton Cavalcanti, during the 1937 state of emergency.
He published many volumes of poetry [ more than thirty six titles] and prose ranging from romance to the passion of political struggle. He was famous for his beautiful sonnets. He wrote many small simple works called Trovas, which were very popular, with easily understood and memorable ideas.
He was known as the Poet of the People and the Youth, for his social messages and politics and also for the lyric workmanship in his poetry, carried strong elements of the modern romanticism movement, but to the times in which he wrote, a powerful dimension of the dramatic. He was one of the more confrontational and combatative poets, and perhaps for these very attributes, one of the more widely read poets of Brazil. He died in January, 1987.
