I lived from 1888-1921. I was from Mexico, and am in the Americas category.
Ramon Lopez Velarde was born in Mexico in 1888.
He began writing when he entered the Council Seminary of Zacatecas in 1900. Later he to studied at the Seminary of Santa Maria de Guadalupe in Aguascalientes and at the Institute of Sciences of the same city. In 1908 he entered the Institute of Literary Science of San Luis Potosí and collaborated in newspapers and magazines of that province.
As a poet, Lopez Velarde went on to be much acclaimed and his work is credited as being deeply influential to later poets, notably Xavier Villaurrutia. Although his poetry sometimes shows the influence of modernismo, he was one of the first poets to rebel against its labored aestheticism. In his work he always sought to be original. His themes included exploring the Mexican landscape and the contrast between the traditions of the countryside and the turbulence of the city. It was also his own anguished struggle between ascetic leanings and pagan sensuality that give his lyrics their peculiar tension, expressiveness, and drama.
His works include La Sangre Devota (The Devout Blood ) and El son del Corazón (The Sound of the Heart ).
Lopez Velarde died from pneumonia on the 19th June, 1921.
