I lived from 1579-1644. I was from Wales, and am in the English category.
Mr. Rees (Rhys) Prichard was born at Llanymddyfri, Carmarthenshire, South Wales, ca. 1579. Being educated in the area, he was in 1597 sent to Jesus College, Oxford. He was ordained priest at Witham (Whytham), in Essex, by John, Suffragan Bishop of Colchester, on Sunday, 25th April, 1602. In June 1603 he took the Degree of Bachelor of Arts; and on the 6th of August the same year, was given the Vicarage of Llanymddyfri (Llandovery), by Anthony, Bishop of St. David.
On the 19th of November 1613, he was instituted Rector of Llanedy, in the Diocese of St. David, (presented thereunto by the king) which he held with the other living by dispensation from the archbishop, 28th of October, 1613 ; confirmed by the Great Seal on the 29th of the same month, and qualified by being Chaplain to Robert Earl of Essex.
In 1614, May 17th, he was made Prebendary of the Collegiate Church of Brecknock, by Anthony, Bishop of St. David; and by the title of Master of Arts, (which Degree he was persuaded to take by Dr. Laud his diocesan) he was made Chancellor of St. David (to which the Prebend of Llowhadden is annexed) on the 14th of September, 1626, upon the resignation of Richard Baylie, Bachelor of Divinity of St. John's College.
He died at Llanymddyfri, about the month of November, in 1644, and was likely buried in the church there. During his life he gave lands worth 20 l. per annum for the settling a free school at Llanymddyfri, together with an house to keep it in. Afterwards the house was inhabited by four schoolmasters successively, and the money paid to them. At some point, the River Towy flooded and swept away the house. The lands were occupied in the late 1600's by Roger Manwaring.
