Shock Troops

Men went happily to death
But they were not the men
Who marched
For years
Up to the line.
These rode a few times
And were gone
Leaving a heritage of obscene song.

this has always been the true heritage of man - paying for our father's sins, whoever these fathers are. this is the true original sin of man, cleaning the proud wreckage of past generations.

Given that this was written before his Spanish War days I presume it is a reference to World War I when all the professional soldiers started a war in which millions of volunteers and conscripts got killed. But then that could apply to so many wars where it is the raw recruits who usually form the largest group of casualties.
As for the obscene songs every army has them but they are nowhere near as obscene as the carnage of war itself.
