Every so often he vows to start a better life.
But when night comes with her own counsels,
with her compromises, and with her promises;
but when night comes with her own power
of the body that wants and demands, he returns,
forlorn, to the same fatal joy.

this was absolutely stunning. i LOVE the graceful way he handles such a dense topic. how often do we hope to gather up the tendrils of a broken life and start anew with fresh resolve? only to be thrown against the ebb of "dark"/"night"--that is, our natural impulses. it's very hard to contain the self which is born of an environment without leaving that environment. sometimes, i think, the best way to change is to uproot.
