A Man's Requirements

I

Love me Sweet, with all thou art,
Feeling, thinking, seeing;
Love me in the lightest part,
Love me in full being.

II

Love me with thine open youth
In its frank surrender;
With the vowing of thy mouth,
With its silence tender.

III

Love me with thine azure eyes,
Made for earnest grantings;
Taking colour from the skies,
Can Heaven's truth be wanting?

IV

Love me with their lids, that fall
Snow-like at first meeting;
Love me with thine heart, that all
Neighbours then see beating.

V

Love me with thine hand stretched out
Freely — open-minded:
Love me with thy loitering foot, —
Hearing one behind it.

VI

Love me with thy voice, that turns
Sudden faint above me;
Love me with thy blush that burns
When I murmur 'Love me!'

VII

Love me with thy thinking soul,
Break it to love-sighing;
Love me with thy thoughts that roll
On through living — dying.

VIII

Love me in thy gorgeous airs,
When the world has crowned thee;
Love me, kneeling at thy prayers,
With the angels round thee.

IX

Love me pure, as muses do,
Up the woodlands shady:
Love me gaily, fast and true,
As a winsome lady.

X

Through all hopes that keep us brave,
Farther off or nigher,
Love me for the house and grave,
And for something higher.

XI

Thus, if thou wilt prove me, Dear,
Woman's love no fable,
I will love thee — half a year —
As a man is able.

    A man's requirements

    The romance Of Elizabeth Barret Browning, and Robert Browning is unparalled! They have immortalised it with their poems, inspiring other pure loves.

    oo this powerful and full of honest from the soul. I se his eyes streath out to the thought of his love. HE ever wants her to love him. Love me.... that's all he ponders with. His lips ned to confess of his love that will ever bless.

    Fall into these subtle leaves that fall with in my authum mind and stay there thought i know the season shall pass by.

    Really good.

    Very Witty

    HAHAHA!
    I love this, so beautifully written that I really wasn't expecting that tremendous punchline.

    absolutely brilliant

    the whole time, you think it's a love poem - and it is, in a way - then it turns around suddenly.

    Elisabeth Barrett Browning, I'm impressed! Not only did you have high ideals and beautiful words, but a sharp mind and biting wit. Truly an amazing woman.

    And... all of you who think it's a beautiful love poem: you clearly didn't read through to the end.

    What a beautiful poem written for the man she loves with all her heart and soul, how blessed Robert was to have such a love.

    It lures you in like any great lover does. First so soft and sweet and then once it is steady , you see the realities of Love. And then at the end? You get bitten by the truth. Men and her view on their love. How utterly brief it is.. I am awed by it's tone but saddened that like all great people? She felt pain too.. Catressa

    Wow

    I just re-read it and the poem is even better and more impressive than the first time. I was not really aware of the title until just now "A Man's Requirements." It is so naked and open and giving as though the poem wants to be kissed. How could you not love the author of such a work?

    LOL ohhh the wit, oh the humour! This is great! This is love according to a man... whoever wrote this obviously had no problem making light of himself!

    Somewhat charming, although it is, of course, the final stanza to truly make this great. It is sweet, yet that final twist awakens it to reality. It's nice to see even those prepared to risk all for love still have that playful sense of irony in them.

    oh, son-of-a-gun~!!! this is a great, great! aw- look at that sarcasm: first the sweet coating, tranquility and complacency, then reach the sour middle- oh! A perfect love poem, with infinite sweetness and everything, is made twice perfect by the last little quatrain!
    "Thus, if thou wilt prove me, Dear,
    Woman's love no fable,
    I will love thee -- half a year --
    As a man is able."
    Oh! irony is the highest form of wit! Can anyone beat this please?

    Dear Kirshna64! listen
    "Thus, if thou wilt prove me, Dear,
    Woman's love no fable,
    I will love thee -- half a year --
    As a man is able."
    Listen I still believe that it’s a very sweet poem

    The list of man's requirements is quite long and he wriggles out in the end as is his wont with a noncommittal "As a man is able"!! I do not think this is a sweet love poem. Somehow, I feel this is dripping with sarcasm.
