Mother To Son

Well, son, I'll tell you:
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor—
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's,
And turnin' corners,
And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where there ain't been no light.
So, boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps.
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.
Don't you fall now—
For I'se still goin', honey,
I'se still climbin',
And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.

I really enjoyed reading this poem. I can feel the dialect when I think it, and even if I try to speak this poem aloud, I can't help but let it out slow and western. Very nice, with a wonderful message about determination. Marvelous.

It seems the mother's son grasped her feelings and took them as his own. How else could he write such masterly poetry and show such feelings with great images.

I love your poem! To me it means that the mother's life was hard, and she doesn't want her son's life to end up like that too. Is that what it really means or not?

For me Hughes is passing on the same message that most parent's pass on to their children.
"Life is hard, I have struggled to get this far up life's ladder and I will keep struggling to get higher. Don't you just rest on my efforts but keep struggling higher for yourself and for your own children."

Every word is well thought out and is used for an effect the word tack is used with a double meaning tack as in a small nail thing and tack as in a zig-zag course, with sudden changes as the mother had experienced the word splinter is a small piece of wood and the word splinter is to break into small sharp pieces, like her her heart has been broken down before boards torn up could be a metaphor for her close torn up because boards are used to cover the ground and clothes are used to cover the body the word bare is singeled out becasue it is a metaphor for times when her house was bare of furnishing or her body was bare of close or bare as in her life was simple and dull then he uses a great metaphor when he talks about goin dark and no light he is talking about how the mom has done things she is ashamed of, bad things(hence the "no light" and the "dark")things like stealing, working in a bar, selling her body etc. Overall an exceptional, high-minded and well constructed piece of poetry

I dislike this poem. I mean, it has a nice message, but I'm not very fond of the way Hughes writes. The ghetto voice does give this some redeeming realism, though.

The Mother to Son poem by Langston Hughes is about a mother sharing her life experiences with her son. The mother is trying to teach her son lessons she learned throughout her life. The theme of this poem is persistence, overcoming hardships and never giving up. A poetic device Hughes uses in this poem is a metaphor, to show that the mother’s life has not been easy and she has had to struggle through a lot. “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair”, Hughes compares the mothers hard life to a “crystal stair”, which represents a perfect easy life. Another poetic device Hughes uses is symbols; he uses symbols all throughout the poem to represent what the mother has been through in her life. “It’s had tacks in it, / And splinters, / And boards torn up, / And places with no carpet on the floor --/ Bare.” These are symbols that represent the suffering and obstacles the mother has gotten through in her life. The placement of the word “Bare” as the only word on the line puts emphasis on the word and makes more of an impact. The mother’s message that she is trying to convey to her son is that no matter how hard life gets do not give up. Hughes uses many symbols to convey the message that the mother has overcome her struggles becasue her persistence, “I’se been a-climbin’ on, / And reachin’ landin’s, / And turnin’ corners”. The poem Mother to Son is a mother giving her son advice on life because she knows his life will not be a “crystal stair”, just as hers was not and she knows how hard it will be for him.

    oh,yeah?

"Mother To Son" is a reinforcement of what seems common sense encouragement by it coming from one in your life. It's been said to watch succesful ones for the results, but that isn't done through a poster of evidence but past experience you can maybe nod to, shaken out of shortsightedness, mostly..

This had a way of repairing oneself from just feeling as poor folk of circumstances, if the clear step isn't only found in prevention of tripping but splitting from the "splinters" like whether to make a stamp on what has logic for a "climb." Hence, one you're dependent on doing it may make you think.

I find this poem encouraging because it’s not only an inspirational message from a mother to a son, but to the reader.  No matter what kinds of mountains I have to climb in life, I know that I can overcome them because Langston has revealed to me with his them of hope and encouragement in, Mother to Son . Everything the mother in the poem tells her son , arouses in me the want and need to keep climbing every mountain in my way and to make lemonade when life gives me lemons.

THey want a child to have a better life than they did. This poem teaches one to never give up and to keep climbing those stairs toward their ultimate goal.

This is one of my favorite poems of all time. I can still remember the first time I ever heard it. I was in 9th grade and my beloved English teacher read it to our class. I'm not sure it moved everyone the way it moved me...and this made me a touch sad. It brought goosebumps to my skin. Not only has this been an encouraging, "when the going gets tough...the tough get going" for me, but it also reminded me very much of my grandfather...who was the strongest and greatest man I've ever known. That's what this poem speaks of to me...strength and perseverence. Elaina
