Writing

often it is the only
thing
between you and
impossibility.
no drink,
no woman's love,
no wealth
can
match it.
nothing can save
you
except
writing.
it keeps the walls
from
failing.
the hordes from
closing in.
it blasts the
darkness.
writing is the
ultimate
psychiatrist,
the kindliest
god of all the
gods.
writing stalks
death.
it knows no
quit.
and writing
laughs
at itself,
at pain.
it is the last
expectation,
the last
explanation.
that's
what it
is.

    Charles Bukowski

    From guest Anthony Mario (contact)
When God made Charles "Buk" Bukowski, he didn't break the mold. He dropped it and all future Buks splintered all over his workshop floor. His poetry, he said, was written for the common man, the people he lived amongst for years, the down and outers, really he had known his whole life. The "blank gun silencer" is an example of the exquisite poem simply written. Bukowski never really cared to be tied to the Beats, and it's obvious from his life and his work, he wasn't. He wrote like a madman -- drunk and banging away at his typewriter nightly. He rejected the conventionality of established poets such as Auden because he saw them as "prissy" or soft, never close to the hardness of authentic life. Distinguishing him from the Beats there appears to be a greater academic interest in his work than theirs. Not to misunderstand me. Buk did not dislike the Beat writers, personally he liked them and socialized with them. But he never viewed his work or his thinking as being a part of their movement. He was the ultimate singular personality.
