To Nobodaddy

Why art thou silent & invisible
Father of jealousy
Why dost thou hide thyself in clouds
From every searching Eye

Why darkness & obscurity
In all thy words & laws
That none dare eat the fruit but from
The wily serpents jaws
Or is it because Secrecy
gains females loud applause

Blake's "Nobodaddy" may also be a pun on "Noffodei," the betrayer of the Templars in Masonic myth. There is also a Masonic reference in the last prose paragraph concluding "A Marriage of Heaven and Hell": "....nor his accepted brethren -- whom, tyrant, he calls free...." refers to "the free and accepted Masons."
