Dogs

Spaniels are all very well,
But they smell.

Scalyhams deposit white hairs
On the chairs.

Wire-hairs are all right,
But they fight.

(Which also applies to the Irish variety,
Such charming society.)
A Dalmatian is no good, of course,
Without a carriage or a horse.

And hounds are nice, but you've got
To have such a lot.

Dashshunds are capital fun,
But slightly Hun.

Very large breeds, such as St. Bernards eat
Quantities of meat,

While very small ones, unhappily,
Bark so much and so yappily.

But please don't jump to the conclusion that I dislike
A tyke.

It's simply that I prefer
An honest-to-goodness Cur.
